Pune Vehicle Registrations Decline Ahead of Gudi Padwa, Reflecting Changing Consumer Habits

In a notable shift from tradition, vehicle registrations at Pune's Regional Transport Office (RTO) have shown a significant decline in the period leading up to the Gudi Padwa festival. Data reveals that overall registrations dropped by nearly 10% compared to the same timeframe last year, suggesting that many residents are no longer waiting for auspicious occasions to make their purchases.

Registration Numbers Show Clear Downturn

During the 11 days preceding Gudi Padwa this year, the Pune RTO recorded 11,937 vehicle registrations. This marks a substantial decrease from the 13,190 registrations documented during the equivalent period in the previous year. The decline was observed across all vehicle categories, including two-wheelers, cars, autorickshaws, and goods carriers.

An RTO official commented on the trend, stating, "While this specific festival period shows a drop, the broader picture tells a different story. Total vehicle registrations in 2025 reached over 3.31 lakh, significantly higher than the 3.02 lakh registered in 2024. Additionally, more than 75,000 vehicles have already been registered this year."

The official emphasized that this pattern indicates a fundamental change in consumer behavior. "People are still buying vehicles, but many are no longer delaying their purchases for festivals or special occasions. This trend is expected to continue as practicality increasingly outweighs tradition," the official added.

Mixed Responses from Pune Residents

The data reflects a division among Pune's residents regarding vehicle purchasing habits. Some continue to adhere to traditional practices, while others prioritize immediate needs over ceremonial timing.

Palkesh Dixit, a bank employee from Camp, represents the traditional viewpoint. "I booked a car earlier in the month and planned to take delivery on Gudi Padwa. My parents stressed the importance of this. I also feel that buying something new on an auspicious day like Gudi Padwa is always special," Dixit explained.

In contrast, Akshay Kadam, a student from Tingrenagar, opted for practicality. "I was desperate to buy a two-wheeler and purchased it earlier this month, even though my grandfather advised waiting until the festival. Commuting to college and tuitions by bus became very hectic, and I often arrived late. I preferred cycling, but the roads have become too dangerous. So, I bought a new two-wheeler in early March," Kadam stated.

Electric Vehicle Registrations Experience Sharp Decline

A particularly concerning aspect of the data is the significant drop in electric vehicle (EV) registrations during the festival period. Despite the continuation of a favorable 5% GST rate, EV registrations fell by nearly 28%. This year saw 1,530 EVs registered, compared to 2,124 in the same period last year.

However, the annual figures provide some context to this decline. Overall EV registrations in Pune for 2025 stood at 37,470, showing a 4% increase from the 35,995 registrations recorded in 2024.

Another RTO official expressed concern about the festival-period drop in EV registrations. "Though the exact reasons for low EV registrations remain unclear, it is a concern. But with the EV policy and reduced vehicle prices, we hope the registration numbers grow soon," the official remarked.

Earlier insights from vehicle dealers have pointed to several factors contributing to lower EV adoption. Inadequate charging infrastructure and maintenance issues with certain EV brands have been identified as key barriers preventing more widespread acceptance of electric vehicles in the region.

Broader Implications for Vehicle Market Trends

The registration data from Pune's RTO highlights several important trends in the automotive market:

  • Consumers are increasingly making vehicle purchases based on immediate need rather than waiting for traditional auspicious dates.
  • While overall vehicle registrations have increased year-over-year, festival periods no longer see the same surge in buying activity.
  • Electric vehicles face specific challenges in gaining market traction, despite favorable tax policies and growing environmental awareness.
  • The divide between traditional and practical approaches to major purchases reflects broader societal changes in urban centers like Pune.

As vehicle ownership patterns continue to evolve, these trends may influence how automakers and dealers approach marketing strategies, inventory management, and customer engagement throughout the year rather than focusing primarily on festival seasons.
