India and US to Discuss Trade at G7, but Deal Not Imminent: Officials
India, US to Tackle Trade at G7 but Deal Not Imminent

India and the United States are set to discuss trade issues at the upcoming G7 summit, but a deal is not expected to be finalized immediately, officials said on Friday.

Trade Talks at G7

A senior US official stated that President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have a valuable opportunity to assess the progress of trade negotiations during the G7 meeting. However, the official added that more technical discussions will likely be necessary to reach a final agreement.

Current Status of Negotiations

The two countries have been engaged in trade talks for months, aiming to resolve differences over tariffs, market access, and other issues. While some progress has been made, key sticking points remain.

“The leaders will take stock of where we are, but we are not at the finish line yet,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Implications for Bilateral Trade

India and the US have a growing trade relationship, with bilateral goods and services trade exceeding $190 billion in 2025. A comprehensive trade deal could further boost economic ties, but both sides are cautious about rushing into an agreement.

“We want a balanced and mutually beneficial deal,” an Indian official said. “There are still issues to be worked out.”

The G7 summit, scheduled for later this month in France, will provide a platform for the two leaders to discuss trade alongside other global issues.
