Gurgaon Sector 46 Residents Grapple with Deteriorating Road Infrastructure
In Gurgaon's Sector 46, approximately 4 kilometers of the 18-meter-wide internal road network has fallen into a state of severe disrepair, creating significant daily challenges for local residents. The poor condition of these roads forces commuters to navigate through pothole-filled and uneven stretches, making movement within the sector increasingly difficult and raising serious concerns about the quality of construction and maintenance of civic infrastructure in the area.
Road Construction Quality Under Scrutiny
Residents have revealed that the 18-meter road was constructed in 2022 at a substantial cost of Rs 2.3 crore. However, the infrastructure began showing signs of damage almost immediately after completion. Over time, the surface has deteriorated dramatically, with deep potholes and broken patches appearing across multiple stretches of the road network.
These hazardous conditions compel motorists to either slow down abruptly or swerve unexpectedly to avoid damage to their vehicles, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. The situation proves particularly dangerous for vulnerable groups such as two-wheeler riders and senior citizens who face heightened safety concerns while navigating these treacherous roads.
Residents Voice Frustration Over Unfulfilled Promises
"The condition of the sector's internal roads has made daily commuting very difficult," stated Richa Tiwari, joint secretary of the residents' welfare association. "We have received assurances for the past four years that the roads would be resurfaced, but nothing has changed on the ground."
Local residents report that repeated complaints to civic authorities have resulted only in empty promises and assurances, while the damage continues to worsen across key internal roads. With no repair work currently underway, community members are now demanding accountability and seeking interim measures to make the roads at least temporarily usable.
Calls for Contractor Accountability and Immediate Action
"We have been raising the issue of poor construction quality for the last four years," emphasized Rajkumar Yadav, president of the RWA. "Action must be taken against the contractor as the road did not even last a few months. This is public money, and responsibility must be fixed."
Yadav further suggested practical solutions, adding: "At least till the time approval comes from the government for recarpeting, the civic body should carry out patch repairs to make the road motorable."
Additional Environmental and Health Concerns
Beyond the obvious commuting problems, residents have highlighted additional environmental consequences of the damaged road surfaces. The broken sections have transformed the area into a dust-prone zone, with vehicles passing over uneven patches kicking up significant amounts of dust.
This dust pollution negatively affects local air quality and causes considerable discomfort to pedestrians and residents living along the affected roads, creating both health and quality-of-life issues for the community.
Municipal Response and Future Prospects
Meanwhile, a Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) official provided an update on the situation, stating: "We are in the tendering process for the construction of internal roads in Sector 46." This response indicates that while planning may be underway, immediate relief for residents remains uncertain as they continue to navigate the challenging road conditions on a daily basis.
The ongoing situation in Sector 46 highlights broader concerns about infrastructure quality and maintenance in rapidly developing urban areas, with residents calling for more effective governance and timely interventions to address civic issues that directly impact their daily lives and safety.
