Tata Motors has officially expanded the powertrain options for its flagship SUVs, launching the much-anticipated petrol versions of the Tata Harrier and Tata Safari. The new models aim to capture a wider audience seeking petrol-powered premium utility vehicles.
Petrol Powertrain & Pricing Details
The heart of the new offering is Tata's in-house 1.5-litre TGDI Hyperion turbo-petrol engine. This four-cylinder unit, first seen on the Sierra, has been tuned for the Harrier and Safari to produce 170 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed Aisin-sourced torque-converter automatic transmission.
The Tata Harrier petrol is priced from Rs 12.89 lakh, going up to Rs 24.69 lakh (ex-showroom). It is offered in eight variants. The Tata Safari petrol starts at a slightly higher Rs 13.29 lakh and extends to Rs 25.20 lakh (ex-showroom) across ten variants. The Safari lineup introduces a new top-spec variant called the Accomplished Ultra.
Design & Feature Highlights
Externally, the petrol models mirror their diesel counterparts with minor distinctions. The Harrier petrol debuts a new Crimson Nitro paint scheme, and both SUVs now feature front and rear camera washers for better visibility.
Inside, the cabins receive significant upgrades, adopting a more premium and brighter ambience. Key features include:
- A large 14.53-inch Samsung-sourced QLED touchscreen infotainment system.
- Dolby Atmos audio for an immersive sound experience.
- A new white-and-brown dual-tone interior theme.
- A digital interior rearview mirror with an integrated dashcam.
- Ventilated front seats, panoramic sunroof, and ambient lighting.
- Practical additions like memory-enabled ORVMs and a 65W Type-C charging port.
The top Accomplished Ultra variant on the Safari and the equivalent on the Harrier bundle these features, with the Harrier's Red Dark edition being exclusive to this trim.
Market Positioning & Expectations
This launch marks a strategic move by Tata Motors to cater to the growing demand for petrol SUVs, especially in urban markets where diesel preferences are waning. The new petrol engine offers a different character compared to the familiar 2.0-litre diesel engine (170hp/350Nm) that continues as an option.
Deliveries for the new Tata Harrier petrol and Tata Safari petrol are slated to begin shortly. Customers can book these SUVs online or by visiting their nearest Tata Motors dealership. This expansion strengthens Tata's position in the competitive midsize and full-size SUV segments with a more comprehensive powertrain portfolio.
