Cognizant's Strategic Shift: Tamil Nadu Headcount Declines as New IT Hubs Rise
Cognizant, a global IT services leader, has witnessed a significant reduction in its Tamil Nadu delivery centre workforce, with headcount declining from approximately 81,000 to about 71,000 employees. This shift marks a notable change in the company's hiring strategy, as momentum moves away from traditional strongholds toward emerging technology hubs across India.
Redirection of Hiring Momentum to Emerging Cities
The moderation in Tamil Nadu's headcount coincides with Cognizant's increased focus on cities such as Indore, Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad, and Visakhapatnam. These locations are experiencing stronger penetration in digital services and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), driving growth and attracting fresh investments. The reduction of 10,000 employees at its India headquarters underscores a broader realignment in the company's operational footprint.
Within Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore remains a crucial secondary hub, employing around 16,000 individuals. For over three decades, Cognizant's Chennai base has been central to job creation in the state's IT sector, making this headcount decline particularly noteworthy ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Employment generation and the state's competitiveness in attracting large technology investments are expected to be key electoral issues.
Chennai's Evolving Footprint and National Expansion
India continues to account for about 90% of Cognizant's total delivery centre space, with Chennai maintaining its position as the largest hub at approximately 7 million square feet. However, Chennai's footprint has decreased from 8 million square feet over the past year, reflecting the strategic shift. Other major hubs include Hyderabad (3 million square feet), Pune (2 million square feet), Kolkata (2 million square feet), and Bengaluru (2 million square feet).
Last year, Cognizant sold a 13.6-acre property in Thoraipakkam for Rs 612 crore, a site that had served as a key operational base for more than two decades. This move aligns with the company's broader expansion plans elsewhere in the country.
Major Investments in Visakhapatnam and Overall Growth Trends
Cognizant is actively expanding its presence in Visakhapatnam, with plans to establish a new campus on a 22-acre site at Kapuluppada IT Hills. Backed by the Andhra Pradesh government, this project involves an investment of Rs 1,583 crore and is projected to generate over 8,000 jobs across three phases, highlighting the company's commitment to fostering growth in emerging IT corridors.
Despite the regional shifts, Cognizant's overall headcount rose by 1,800 in the December quarter, reaching 351,600 employees. Attrition eased to 13.9% from 14.5% in the previous quarter, indicating improved employee retention. The company added 14,000 employees in 2025, including approximately 20,000 school graduates, and plans to increase hiring by around 20% to 24,000–25,000 recruits in 2026. This reflects a continued focus on nurturing entry-level talent and adapting to evolving market demands.
