BSE Launches Long-Short and Inverse Indices for Hedged Strategies

BSE Index Services Introduces Innovative Long-Short and Inverse Indices

In a significant move to enhance market offerings, BSE Index Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), has announced the launch of new indices designed to reflect hedged market strategies. The launch includes the BSE Long-Short Indices and BSE Inverse Indices, aimed at providing investors with sophisticated tools for risk management and diversified investment approaches.

Details of the Newly Launched Indices

The indices introduced today comprise two main categories: Inverse Indices and Long-Short Indices. The Inverse Indices, specifically the BSE 150 MidCap 1X Inverse Daily and BSE 200 1X Inverse Daily, track the inverse returns of their underlying benchmarks. This means they are constructed to perform inversely to the BSE 150 Midcap Total Return Index and BSE 200 Total Return Index, respectively, offering a mechanism to hedge against market downturns.

On the other hand, the Long-Short Indices include the BSE 500 Long + 200 1X Inverse 80:20 and BSE 500 Long + 150 MidCap 1X Inverse 80:20. These indices combine long market exposure in the BSE 500 with 1X inverse positions in the BSE 200 and BSE 150 Midcap, using an 80:20 allocation framework. This structure is designed to reflect systematic long-short strategies, balancing broad-based growth potential with downside risk management.

Strategic Framework and Market Impact

Ashutosh Singh, Managing Director and CEO of BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd., emphasized the importance of these new indices in a press statement. He stated, "We are pleased to introduce the BSE Long-Short Indices & BSE Inverse Indices, a differentiated addition to our index offering that reflects the evolving needs of market participants." He further explained that the 80:20 long-short indices are specifically constructed to provide a balanced approach by combining long exposure to the BSE 500 with selective short positions, aiming to support more resilient and innovative product offerings by asset managers in dynamic market conditions.

The new indices are expected to serve as benchmarks for Specialised Investment Funds (SIFs) and other long-short strategies, enabling asset managers to develop more tailored investment products. Investors can now access a broader spectrum of market opportunities, enriching their strategies with tools that cater to both growth and risk mitigation.

Applications and Future Prospects

These indices are poised to play a crucial role in the financial landscape by:

  • Providing exposure to diversified benchmarks with inverse positioning for hedging purposes.
  • Enhancing product innovation for asset managers through rule-based strategies.
  • Offering investors new avenues for portfolio diversification and risk management.

As markets continue to evolve, the introduction of such indices underscores BSE's commitment to fostering innovation and resilience in investment frameworks. This launch marks a step forward in addressing the complex needs of modern investors seeking sophisticated market instruments.
