Rajasthan Dominates India's Solar Landscape, Yet Grapples with Transmission Woes
Rajasthan has emerged as the undisputed leader in India's solar power expansion, contributing nearly 27% of the nation's total installed solar capacity by the end of the fiscal year 2025-26. This milestone comes as India's overall solar capacity reached an impressive 150,260 megawatts (MW), marking a significant stride in the country's clean energy transition.
Gujarat Secures Second Place in Solar Rankings
Gujarat ranked second in this renewable energy race, holding approximately a 20% share of India's solar capacity. Together, Rajasthan and Gujarat accounted for nearly 47% of the national solar portfolio, highlighting their pivotal roles in driving India's shift toward sustainable energy sources.
Transmission Crisis Threatens Rajasthan's Solar Success
Despite its leadership position, Rajasthan is confronting a severe challenge: the inability to transmit the solar power it generates. Due to inadequate transmission infrastructure, solar power operators in the state are unable to utilize between 1,500 and 2,000 MW of electricity daily. This not only represents a national loss but also tarnishes the state's reputation as a renewable energy hub, according to DD Agarwal of Samta Power, a sectoral non-governmental organization.
Agarwal emphasized that these projects were secured through competitive bidding and financed via loans. "Since they cannot take the power they produce, they are suffering huge losses affecting their revenue generation and meeting financial obligations to banks and financial institutions," he added, underscoring the financial strain on developers.
Future Projects and Urgent Infrastructure Needs
Registrations for new solar projects at the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation have surged to about 40,000 MW, encompassing both utility-scale and decentralized plants. A source within the corporation revealed that an additional 3,000 MW of solar projects are expected to be commissioned within the next six months.
However, the official warned, "If the state does not create new transmission capacity and battery storage systems with urgency, many of the capacity will get wasted, affecting investor interest in the state." This urgent call to action highlights the critical need for infrastructure upgrades to sustain growth.
Gujarat's Broader Renewable Energy Leadership
While Rajasthan leads in solar capacity by a substantial margin, Gujarat has distinguished itself as a top performer across multiple renewable energy segments. Gujarat has outpaced Rajasthan significantly in wind power capacity, boasting 15,642 MW compared to Rajasthan's 5,349 MW by the end of 2025-26.
Similarly, Gujarat excels in the rooftop solar segment, with the highest capacity of 6,881 MW. In contrast, Rajasthan's rooftop solar installations lag at 2,090 MW, according to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, indicating areas for potential improvement.
This dynamic underscores the complementary strengths of both states in India's renewable energy landscape, with Rajasthan focusing on large-scale solar and Gujarat leading in wind and distributed solar solutions.
