Trump Repeats Assertion of Mediating India-Pakistan Ceasefire
Former United States President Donald Trump has once more claimed responsibility for brokering a ceasefire between the nuclear-armed nations of India and Pakistan. During a recent cabinet briefing, Trump stated that he resolved complex international conflicts that had persisted for more than thirty years in just one day.
Claims of Halting a Major Conflict
Trump specifically referenced the tensions between India and Pakistan, highlighting what he described as a critical intervention during Operation Sindoor. He asserted, "I solved the other ones in one day that had been going for 32 years. We stopped one that was starting. It was already started. India and Pakistan and the Prime Minister of Pakistan, said President Trump solved something that was going to cost 10 million lives."
Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Trump added, "That was going to cost a lot of lives. Two nuclear nations. Those were complicated, but we got them done quickly." He further explained his motivation, stating, "This one, it's a shame. The only reason I am doing it is because I want to stop death."
Repeated Assertions and Economic Deterrents
This is not the first time Trump has made such claims. Since May 10 of last year, when he announced on social media that India and Pakistan had reached a "full and immediate" ceasefire, he has credited himself with ending hostilities over eighty times. Trump has also frequently boasted about stopping eight wars within his first year back in the White House.
During a "Board of Peace" event on February 20, Trump reiterated his role as a mediator between the South Asian neighbors. He detailed using economic pressure, threatening to impose "200 per cent tariffs" on both countries as a deterrent against military escalation.
India's Official Stance on the Ceasefire
Contrary to Trump's narrative, the Indian government has provided a different account of the ceasefire. According to official sources, the cessation of hostilities occurred during Operation Sindoor after Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations contacted his Indian counterpart directly.
Operation Sindoor was conducted by India as a targeted military response against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. This operation was initiated in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack, underscoring the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region.
The repeated claims by Trump highlight ongoing debates about US foreign policy influence in South Asia, while India maintains its version of events based on direct bilateral communications.
