Indian Students in Iran Begin Evacuation Amid Escalating Conflict Concerns
Indian students enrolled at various universities across Iran have reportedly initiated arrangements to leave the country, driven by growing safety apprehensions as conflicts involving Iran, Israel, and the United States intensify. According to students and associations monitoring the situation, the first group is expected to head towards the Armenia border on Thursday, marking a critical step in their evacuation efforts.
Evacuation Routes and Plans for Medical Students
Students from institutions such as Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS), and Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBUMS) have been presented with two primary evacuation pathways. As reported by news agency ANI, these routes involve transit via Armenia or Azerbaijan, with authorities and student organizations collaborating to ensure safe passage to designated exit points.
While some students are preparing to cross land borders, others have chosen to return to India through commercial flights. Many have secured seats on Flydubai flights scheduled for March 15, March 16, and subsequent dates, enabling them to fly home after reaching a nearby international airport.
Specific Evacuation Strategy for Shiraz University
At Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, which currently hosts 86 Indian medical students, local authorities have proposed a distinct evacuation plan. This strategy involves travel via Shiraz – Qom – Baku Airport in Azerbaijan, from where students can board international flights back to India. This tailored approach aims to address the unique logistical challenges faced by students in this region.
Rising Distress and Coordination Efforts
The developments unfold against a backdrop of escalating safety concerns among Indian students dispersed across Iranian universities. Many have been actively contacting student groups and public representatives to seek assistance and guidance. Mohammad Momin Khan, President of the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) J&K, highlighted the severity of the situation, noting numerous distress calls from students at Golestan University of Medical Sciences, Kerman University of Medical Sciences, and Isfahan University of Medical Sciences.
“Students are calling continuously and requesting evacuation as they believe no part of Iran is currently safe,” Khan stated, emphasizing the fears expressed by both students and their families. He also acknowledged the coordination efforts of political representatives, particularly thanking Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, Member of Parliament, for his ongoing support and assistance in facilitating the safe return of Indian students.
Hopeful Outlook for Safe Passage
With multiple batches preparing to depart in the coming days, students and their families remain optimistic that arrangements for safe passage will continue to improve. The collaborative efforts between authorities, student organizations, and political figures are crucial in ensuring a smooth and secure evacuation process during this period of heightened geopolitical tension.
