Bhisham Sahni's acclaimed Partition play 'Muavze' was recently staged at Virsa Vihar in Amritsar as part of the ongoing National Theatre Festival. The satire exposes the bitter irony of human life being reduced to monetary compensation during the turbulent years following August 1947.
The Play's Core Theme
'Muavze' refers to financial assistance provided by the government to individuals who die or are injured to the extent of disability in riots, natural disasters, or other unforeseen events. In the context of the play, it denotes compensation offered to families of those who lost their lives during Partition. Set against communal violence, the narrative moves beyond victims' suffering to highlight the insensitive and bureaucratic manner in which authorities respond to tragedy.
Plot and Characters
As riots break out, government officials announce compensation for the dead and injured. Over time, the focus shifts from justice and prevention of violence to the pursuit of financial claims. Politicians prepare speeches for every eventuality, while police officials prepare to respond to unrest and safeguard compensation funds. Traders supply weapons to those most actively involved in the violence. In one striking scene, a shopkeeper dismantles his hallowed storefront showcasing religious figures to reveal weapons being sold behind it.
Residents of a slum calculate the compensation payable in the event of a family death, and some even enthusiastically persuade the protagonist, Dinu, to die during the riots so that the family can claim compensation and improve their circumstances.
Performance Details
The play was performed by a young ensemble of artistes, including Nishant, Aryan, Pulkit Goyal, Raveen, Vishal, Uday Chopra, Rajiv, Panthpreet, Sandeep, Pawan Kumar, Lakhwinder Singh and others, who delivered a compelling performance with convincing perfection.
Festival Context
Eminent theatre personality and festival curator Kewal Dhaliwal said the event will conclude with its final performance at Preet Nagar on July 5. The National Theatre Festival continues to bring significant works of Indian theatre to audiences in Amritsar and beyond.
