The Consulate General of India in Atlanta has expressed deep sorrow over the shooting, confirming that the alleged shooter has been taken into custody. In a statement posted on X, the consulate emphasized that all necessary support is being provided to the grieving family. "We are deeply grieved by a tragic shooting incident linked to an alleged family dispute, in which an Indian national was among the victims. The alleged shooter has been arrested, and all possible assistance is being extended to the bereaved family," the statement read.
Police Response and Details of the Incident
Police responded to a distress call around 2:30 am on Friday in the 1000 block of Brook Ivy Court. Upon arrival, officers discovered the bodies of four adults inside the residence, all of whom had suffered fatal wounds. According to police officials, three children were present when the shooting began. In a harrowing turn of events, the children managed to hide in a closet to stay safe.
One of the children bravely called 911, providing crucial information that enabled officers to reach the scene within minutes. The children were unharmed in the incident and have since been picked up by a family member, as reported by investigators.
Suspect Identified and Charges Filed
The suspect has been identified as Vijay Kumar, a 51-year-old resident of Atlanta, according to Fox5 Atlanta. The victims include Kumar's wife, Meemu Dogra, aged 43, along with Gourav Kumar, aged 33, Nidhi Chander, aged 37, and Harish Chander, aged 38, as cited from Gwinnett County police reports.
Vijay Kumar faces a series of serious charges, including:
- Four counts of aggravated assault
- Four counts of felony murder
- Four counts of malice murder
- One count of cruelty to children in the first degree
- Two counts of cruelty to children in the third degree
