In a tragic incident in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya district, three women drowned and two others went missing after they were swept away by strong currents in the Saryu River. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening near the Ram ki Paidi ghat, a popular bathing spot along the river.
Details of the Incident
According to local officials, a group of women were bathing in the river when the water level suddenly rose due to a sudden release of water from a nearby dam. The strong currents caught the women off guard, dragging them into deeper waters. While some managed to escape, five women were pulled away. Rescue teams, including divers from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local boatmen, were immediately deployed.
So far, three bodies have been recovered, while search operations for the remaining two women continue. The deceased have been identified as residents of nearby villages. Their families have been informed, and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem.
CM Yogi Adityanath's Response
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep anguish over the incident. In a statement, he said, "The loss of lives in the Saryu River is extremely painful. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I have directed the district administration to ensure all possible assistance to the affected families and expedite the rescue operations." He also instructed officials to investigate the circumstances leading to the tragedy and take measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Rescue Operations Underway
District Magistrate of Ayodhya, Nitish Kumar, confirmed that a multi-agency rescue operation is ongoing. "We have deployed SDRF teams, police, and local divers. The search for the missing women is continuing with full intensity. We are also monitoring the river's water level," he said. Authorities have urged locals and pilgrims to exercise caution near the river, especially during periods of fluctuating water levels.
Impact and Safety Measures
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the area. Ayodhya, a major pilgrimage site, sees thousands of devotees daily, many of whom bathe in the Saryu River. Local leaders have demanded better safety measures, including warning signs and barriers at dangerous points. The state government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Officials are also reviewing protocols for water release from dams to prevent similar accidents.
