A maritime security incident unfolded off the coast of Yemen after a commercial vessel was approached by a suspicious boat carrying armed individuals, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
Incident Details
The confrontation occurred approximately 88 nautical miles (163 kilometers) southwest of Yemen's Balhaf, in international shipping lanes. UKMTO reported that a cargo vessel notified authorities of being approached by a small craft carrying six armed people while transiting the region.
The situation escalated when the merchant vessel's onboard security team took defensive actions, leading to an exchange of fire between the two parties. UKMTO confirmed that the small craft subsequently turned away and departed, ending the brief skirmish without further escalation.
Regional Context
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in key maritime routes. Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement recently announced a ban on Israeli shipping in the Red Sea, vowing to target any asset associated with Israel. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree declared that a ban on Israeli maritime navigation in the Red Sea is now in effect, warning that any Israeli target will be attacked.
Saree further stated that the group's operations would intensify in response to regional developments, asserting that escalation will be met with escalation. The announcement followed a series of projectile launches from Houthi-controlled territory, with the group claiming responsibility for strikes on central Israel under the principle of the 'Unity of the Fronts.'
Earlier on Monday, the Houthis fired rockets at central Israel, though local emergency services confirmed no injuries were reported from the aerial activity.
