A devastating wildfire swept through the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, reducing approximately two dozen hutments to ashes. Simultaneously, a separate forest fire in the Rajouri district triggered a series of landmine explosions along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Keri sector, raising concerns about safety in the border region.
Kathua Wildfire
The blaze in Kathua broke out in a remote area, quickly engulfing makeshift shelters and causing significant property loss. Firefighting teams were deployed to control the flames, and no casualties have been reported so far. The cause of the fire is under investigation, with officials suspecting dry conditions and strong winds may have contributed to its rapid spread.
Rajouri Forest Fire and LoC Landmine Blasts
In Rajouri district, a forest fire erupted near the LoC in the Keri sector, leading to multiple landmine explosions. The area is heavily mined as part of border security measures. The blasts, though contained within the forest, created panic among local residents. Security forces have cordoned off the affected zone and are monitoring the situation closely. The fire is believed to have been sparked by extreme heat and dry vegetation, common during the summer months.
Response and Safety Measures
Authorities have mobilised fire tenders and disaster response teams to both locations. In Rajouri, efforts are focused on preventing the fire from spreading to civilian areas and ensuring that unexploded ordnance remains stable. The Indian Army has been alerted, and villagers near the LoC have been advised to stay indoors. In Kathua, relief measures are being arranged for those who lost their homes.
These incidents underscore the heightened fire risk in Jammu and Kashmir during the dry season, with forest fires posing a recurring threat to both ecology and human safety. Officials urge residents to exercise caution and report any signs of fire immediately.
