A devastating fire erupted in a Manhattan apartment building early Wednesday morning, resulting in three fatalities and 14 injuries. The blaze broke out on the third floor of a six-story residential structure located in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood. Firefighters responded to the scene shortly after 5 a.m. and managed to contain the fire within an hour, preventing it from spreading to adjacent buildings.
Details of the Incident
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) reported that the fire started on the third floor and quickly escalated. Crews arrived to find heavy flames and smoke billowing from the building. The three victims were found on the third floor, while the injured were transported to local hospitals with various injuries, including smoke inhalation and burns. Two of the injured are in critical condition, according to officials.
Response and Investigation
Approximately 100 firefighters and emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest it may have been accidental. FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh expressed condolences to the victims' families and praised the swift response of the firefighters. The building's fire alarm system was operational, but it remains unclear if all residents were able to evacuate in time.
The Red Cross has been assisting displaced residents, providing temporary shelter and support. The incident has raised concerns about fire safety in older buildings, as the structure was built in the early 20th century and may not have had modern fire suppression systems. Local authorities are urging residents to ensure their smoke detectors are functioning and to have an evacuation plan in place.
