US Navy Secretary John Phelan Removed Amid Iran Tensions

The sudden exit of the US Navy Secretary has become a major talking point, especially at a time when the Navy is actively involved in operations linked to Iran. The name at the centre of this development is John Phelan. His removal has raised curiosity, with many trying to understand who he is and how he reached such a key position.

A Businessman, Not a Military Officer

John Phelan is not from a military background. Unlike many who lead defence roles, he built his career in business. He was appointed as the US Navy Secretary in 2025, making his entry into government relatively recent.

Strong Connection with Donald Trump

Phelan is known to be close to Donald Trump. Before joining the administration, he and his wife helped raise large funds for Trump’s campaign. As highlighted by CNN, when he was appointed, Trump had said, “John will be a tremendous force for our Naval servicemembers, and a steadfast leader in advancing my America First vision.” Even after his removal, Trump spoke positively about him. He said, “John Phelan is a long time friend, and very successful businessman, who did an outstanding job serving as my Secretary Of The Navy for the last year.” He added, “I very much appreciate the job that he has done, and would certainly like to have him back within the Trump Administration sometime in the future.”

Why He Is in the News Now

Phelan has been asked to step down with immediate effect. As reported by CNN, the decision came after Pete Hegseth spoke with Trump and conveyed that Phelan should resign or be removed. Officials said both leaders agreed that the Navy needed a change in leadership. According to the report, this development comes at a time when the US Navy is working to stop Iranian ships during a ceasefire, making the timing important.

Ongoing Tensions Behind the Scenes

There had been differences for some time between Phelan and Hegseth, as highlighted in the CNN report. The main issue was the speed of shipbuilding reforms, which was seen as slow. There were also concerns about Phelan being in direct touch with Trump, which did not go down well within the defence setup. These issues became more serious during a meeting on shipbuilding, where Trump was reportedly unhappy with the progress.

What Happened Before He Left

After being told to step down, Phelan tried to confirm if the decision had directly come from Trump. He contacted officials and also went to the White House. According to the report, he later met Trump briefly, who confirmed that he was no longer in the role. Soon after, an official statement said he would leave immediately. “We are grateful to Secretary Phelan for his service… We wish him well,” Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said.
