American military forces have successfully eliminated a high-ranking Al-Qaeda operative in northwest Syria. This action was a retaliatory strike directly connected to a deadly ambush last month. That attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter.
Targeting a Terrorist Leader
US Central Command officially confirmed the strike on Friday. The operation specifically targeted Bilal Hasan al-Jasim. Officials described him as an experienced terrorist leader. He was directly involved in plotting attacks. His activities were directly linked to the December 13 assault.
The ambush resulted in tragic losses. Sergeant Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard were killed. Interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat also lost his life in the attack.
A Message of Resolve
Admiral Brad Cooper, the CENTCOM commander, issued a strong statement. He said the operation clearly demonstrates Washington's unwavering determination. The US is committed to pursuing all individuals responsible for attacks on American personnel.
"The death of this terrorist operative shows our resolve," Cooper stated. "We will relentlessly pursue terrorists who attack our forces. There is absolutely no safe haven for those who plot, conduct, or inspire attacks against American citizens and our warfighters. We will find you."
Third Wave of Retaliation
This strike represents the third wave of US retaliation ordered by President Donald Trump. It follows the initial deadly assault. The operation is part of a broader campaign. This campaign targets "ISIS thugs" who are attempting to reorganize. Their efforts come after the fall of former Syrian leader Bashar Assad approximately one year ago.
President Trump has commented on the situation. He noted that Syrian forces are now fighting alongside US troops. This cooperation is expanding under the anti-ISIS coalition framework. The president also mentioned that Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa was extremely angry and disturbed by the December attack.
Operation Hawkeye Strike
According to CENTCOM, the ongoing mission is codenamed "Hawkeye Strike." This joint operation involves US forces and allied partners. Key allies include Jordan and Syria. Together, they have struck more than 100 Islamic State targets. These targets include critical infrastructure and weapons caches.
The campaign continues to apply pressure on terrorist networks in the region. The goal is to disrupt their ability to plan and execute future attacks.
