Heroic Rescue in Gujarat: Tribal Father Fights Leopard Bare-Handed
In a remarkable display of courage, a tribal man from a remote village in Chhota Udepur district of Gujarat wrestled a leopard with his bare hands, forcing open its jaws to save his four-year-old daughter from a fatal attack. The incident occurred in Rasli village, located in Pavi Jetpur taluka, on Wednesday evening.
The Attack
The young girl was playing in the backyard of her home while her mother was working nearby. As dusk fell, a leopard crept into the area and suddenly pounced on the child. The mother's screams for help alerted the father, Suresh Rathwa, who rushed outside. Initially frozen in horror at the sight of his daughter in the predator's grip, Rathwa quickly gathered his courage and launched a counterattack.
The Confrontation
Rathwa snatched the girl from the leopard and repeatedly struck the animal with his free hand. Despite the leopard's attempts to claw at him, Rathwa held his daughter tightly. The intense face-off lasted several minutes. 'The leopard refused to back off and repeatedly tried clawing into Rathwa, who tightly clutched his daughter with the other hand,' said Jaydeep Solanki, Range Forest Officer of Pavi Jetpur.
Ultimately, the leopard loosened its grip and fled into the fields behind Rathwa's house. 'Rathwa showed a lot of courage. Villagers have spotted leopards in the area earlier, but this was the first attack on a human here,' Solanki told TOI.
Aftermath and Treatment
The girl sustained severe injuries to her face and neck but is responding well to treatment at a local hospital. Officials believe the leopard likely strayed into the village from a nearby river ravine in search of food. Locals reported seeing the leopard again a few hours after the incident. Three cages and trap cameras have been installed around the village to track and capture the animal.
