The Indian Embassy in Doha has expressed deep concern and solidarity following a major explosion at Qatar's Ras Laffan Industrial City on Sunday evening, which injured at least 54 people and left 18 missing. In a statement shared on X, the embassy said, "At this challenging and difficult time, the Embassy of India and the entire Indian community in Qatar stand in solidarity with the Government and people of Qatar. We wish for the speedy recovery of those injured and hope and pray for the safety of those missing."
Emergency Response and Support
To assist those affected, the embassy provided emergency contact numbers (+974-55647502 and +974-55384683) and a dedicated support email (cons.doha@mea.gov.in). The explosion occurred at the Barzan local gas supply facility during start-up operations, according to state-run firm QatarEnergy. Emergency response teams were immediately mobilized and have since contained the blaze, though the extent of damage to the facility—critical for Qatar's domestic gas supply and power generation—has not been detailed.
Casualties and Rescue Operations
Qatar's Ministry of Interior confirmed 54 injuries and 18 people unaccounted for. Authorities described the explosion as a "technical accident" and assured no hazardous leaks threaten public safety. The Qatari International Search and Rescue Group, in coordination with civil defence units, launched an intensive operation to locate the missing persons. Rescue and recovery efforts continued through the night, but officials have not released information on the nationalities or identities of the victims. An investigation is underway to determine the precise cause of the technical malfunction.
