Russia unleashed one of its largest aerial assaults on Ukraine, launching multiple salvos of missiles and drones targeting the capital, Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that a Russian missile strike on a residential apartment building in Kyiv the previous day resulted in 24 fatalities, including three teenagers, according to local officials.
Massive Barrage Since Invasion Began
The cruise missile struck a nine-story corner building during what the Ukrainian air force described as Russia's most extensive bombardment since the full-scale invasion commenced. Zelensky stated on Thursday that Moscow had deployed more than 1,560 drones against Ukrainian population centers since Wednesday. In total, approximately 180 locations across the country sustained damage, including over 50 residential buildings.
Continued Attacks and Civilian Impact
The relentless assaults have caused widespread destruction and loss of life. The attack on the apartment block in Kyiv highlights the ongoing threat to civilians. Emergency services continue to search for survivors amid the rubble. The Ukrainian government has called for increased international support to counter the aerial bombardments.
This latest offensive marks a significant escalation in Russia's campaign, utilizing both drones and cruise missiles to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses. The attacks have targeted critical infrastructure and residential areas, raising concerns about further casualties.
