The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against a doctor and two other individuals in connection with a bioterror plot linked to the Islamic State (ISIS). The accused allegedly planned to carry out mass poisoning using ricin, a highly toxic substance derived from castor seeds. Ricin is classified under Schedule I of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which bans its production and use.
Details of the Plot
According to the NIA, the conspirators intended to use ricin to further the nefarious agenda of ISIS. The investigation revealed that the doctor, whose identity has not been disclosed, played a key role in procuring and preparing the toxin. The other two accused were involved in planning and executing the attack.
Ricin: A Deadly Toxin
Ricin is a potent poison that can be fatal even in small doses. It can be inhaled, ingested, or injected, and there is no known antidote. The substance is extracted from castor seeds and has been used in several foiled terrorist plots worldwide.
Legal Proceedings
The chargesheet was filed on May 5, 2026, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The accused are currently in judicial custody and face serious charges, including conspiracy to wage war against the nation and committing terrorist acts.
The NIA has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. The investigation is ongoing, and further arrests are not ruled out.
