A Colombian mercenary captured by Russian forces has made startling allegations regarding the treatment of foreign fighters in the ongoing Ukraine war. In an interview with a Russian channel, 23-year-old William Andres Gallego Orozco revealed that he was recruited under false pretenses by the Ukrainian armed forces.
False Promises and Forced Combat
Orozco claimed he was hired as a cook with a promised monthly salary of $3,200. However, upon arrival, he was subjected to brief military training and subsequently assigned to a foreign mercenary unit fighting against Russian troops. He alleged that Ukrainian commanders deliberately stayed away from the front lines, leaving foreign recruits to face heavy casualties.
Heavy Casualties Among Foreign Recruits
The Colombian fighter stated that he witnessed significant losses among foreign fighters, while Ukrainian commanders remained in safer positions. His account raises questions about the recruitment and deployment of international volunteers in the conflict.
Orozco's capture by Russian forces adds to the growing number of foreign fighters detained in the war. The Russian military has previously reported capturing mercenaries from various countries, including Colombia, and has used such cases for propaganda purposes.
The Ukrainian government has not yet responded to these allegations. However, Kyiv has consistently denied mistreating foreign volunteers and maintains that all international fighters are integrated into regular military units with proper training and support.
