Andhra Pradesh has launched the first-ever survey of the critically endangered peacock tarantula, also known as the Gooty tarantula. This arboreal species relies on mature trees and undisturbed forest patches, making it both highly specialized and exceptionally vulnerable to habitat loss. The survey aims to assess the population and distribution of this rare spider, which is endemic to the region. Conservationists hope the data will inform future protection efforts for the species and its fragile ecosystem.
