Tragic Elephant Attack Claims Life of Elderly Woman in Odisha Forest
A devastating wildlife encounter resulted in the death of a 68-year-old woman in the forests of Odisha's Deogarh district. The incident occurred on Sunday morning when the victim, identified as Pati Pradhan from Aaunli village, was gathering forest produce.
Fatal Forest Encounter Details
Pati Pradhan had ventured into the Aunli Khesra forest area under the Reamal forest range to collect kendu leaves and cashews, a common practice among local residents. During her foraging activity, a wild tusker suddenly appeared before her and trampled her to death. The attack happened in the dense forest terrain where visibility and escape routes are limited.
Villagers who discovered the tragic scene immediately alerted forest authorities about the incident. The response team included Reamal forest range officer Niranjan Dharua and personnel from the Kundeigola police station, who promptly reached the location to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.
Official Response and Compensation Process
Forest officer Niranjan Dharua confirmed that the legal heirs of the deceased woman will receive compensation amounting to Rs 10 lakh once all necessary formalities are completed. "As per provision, the legal heir of deceased woman will get compensation amount of Rs 10 lakh after completion of necessary formalities," Dharua stated.
The forest department is actively monitoring the situation, with officials tracking the movement of the tusker responsible for the attack. "We are now tracking the movement of that tusker who is in Aunli Khesra forest," Dharua added, highlighting ongoing efforts to manage wildlife-human conflicts in the region.
Family Tragedy and Aftermath
Family members of Pati Pradhan arrived at the scene after receiving information about the tragic incident. The victim's body was transported to the Chendipada community health centre in neighboring Angul district for post-mortem examination. Following the required medical procedures, the remains were handed over to her grieving family for final rites.
This incident highlights the persistent challenges of human-wildlife conflict in forest-adjacent communities across Odisha, where villagers often enter forest areas for livelihood activities despite potential dangers from wild animals.
