Karnataka is witnessing a surge in cybercrime as criminals increasingly exploit social media platforms and encrypted messaging apps to defraud victims. Since 2025, the state police have taken down 465 suspicious groups on Telegram, 61 on WhatsApp, and 268 on Facebook, along with 15 accounts on Instagram.
Modus Operandi of Cybercriminals
Fraudsters lure victims through fake job offers, investment schemes, and lottery winnings, often using encrypted apps to evade detection. They create convincing profiles and groups to build trust before demanding money or personal information.
Police Crackdown
The Karnataka Police's cybercrime division has intensified surveillance and collaboration with platform providers. Officials urge citizens to verify offers and report suspicious activities immediately.
Authorities warn that the dark web is also being used to sell stolen data, amplifying the threat. They advise the public to enable two-factor authentication and avoid sharing sensitive details online.
This crackdown is part of a broader effort to combat the state's growing scam economy, which has targeted thousands of residents.
