Uttarakhand's High Himalayas Defy Summer Onset with Persistent Winter Conditions

As much of North India begins its gradual transition into warmer summer weather, a stark contrast is unfolding in the high Himalayan regions of Uttarakhand. Here, intense winter conditions continue to dominate, with heavy snowfall reported across the upper reaches since Sunday night.

Badrinath Dham Blanketed in Fresh Snow

The sacred pilgrimage town of Badrinath in Chamoli district has been significantly impacted by this weather phenomenon. The premises of Shri Badrinath Dham, one of the most revered Himalayan pilgrimage sites, have been completely blanketed under thick layers of snow.

Authorities report that the iconic snow-capped peaks of Neelkanth Parvat and Narayan Parvat, which majestically overlook the temple town, have received fresh snow cover. This has been accompanied by a sharp drop in temperatures, bringing back severe cold conditions to Badrinath and surrounding lower areas.

Himalayan Weather Patterns Explained

This type of weather is not unusual for the higher reaches of the Himalayas, where winter conditions can persist well into the spring season. While plains experience warming temperatures, the elevated regions often maintain their cold climate, creating this dramatic weather contrast.

Kedarnath Also Experiences Severe Winter Conditions

In recent weeks, similar severe weather has affected another major Himalayan temple in Uttarakhand. The temple town of Kedarnath in Rudraprayag district experienced heavy snowfall on January 28, accumulating three to four feet of snow over the temple complex.

District administration reports indicate temperatures plunged to as low as -16°C during this period. Despite these challenging conditions, security personnel from the Rudraprayag Police and Indo-Tibetan Border Police have maintained routine patrols around temple grounds and sensitive areas.

Security and Preparations Continue Despite Harsh Conditions

Official sources from both the police department and district administration office in Rudraprayag confirm that security at Kedarnath Dham remains tight despite the difficult geography and severe weather. Security officers have reportedly maintained good morale while performing their duties in frigid temperatures and icy winds.

Preparations are simultaneously underway for the reopening of Kedarnath temple ahead of the upcoming pilgrimage season. The temple is scheduled to reopen for pilgrims on April 22, 2026, at 8:00 AM.

Official Announcement of Reopening Date

The reopening date was formally announced during Mahashivratri celebrations based on Panchang calculations at the Shri Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, which serves as the winter seat of Lord Kedarnath. The announcement ceremony saw participation from several dignitaries including Kedarnath Rawal Bhimashankar Ling, Kedarnath MLA Asha Nautiyal, and Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee Chairman Hemant Dwivedi.

This persistent winter weather in Uttarakhand's high Himalayan regions serves as a reminder of the diverse climatic conditions across India's varied topography, even as seasonal transitions occur elsewhere in the country.
