Trichy Corporation Kicks Off Dense Tree Planting Initiative to Fight Air Pollution

The Trichy City Corporation launched a major tree planting drive on Tuesday. This initiative took place at Park View Road near EB Road in ward 18. It falls under the National Clean Air Programme or NCAP.

Expanding Green Efforts Across All Zones

The corporation plans to extend such drives to vacant spaces in all five zones of the city. This includes properties owned by the local body. The goal is clear: combat air pollution and boost air quality levels.

In the first phase, officials identified around 30,000 square feet of vacant land. They aim to raise native tree saplings here. Workers planted as many as 350 saplings already. Another 1,000 will go into the ground over time.

Scientific Approach and Collaboration

Authorities chose saplings based on soil conditions. They also considered biodiversity enhancement at the selected site. The initiative saw collaboration with Bishop Heber College.

V Anand Gideon from the department of botany explained the dense plantation model. He said it adopts scientific practices. This helps the urban local body achieve long-term NCAP goals.

Trichy corporation prepared the ground carefully. They ensured proper spacing and soil management. Post-plantation care measures are in place too. These steps aim to improve urban green cover, enhance air quality, and build climate resilience.

Support from Industry and NGOs

The drive received support from Young Indians. This is the Climate Action Vertical of CII Trichy. The corporation stated that NGOs will handle watering and fencing needs for the sites. This ensures the saplings get necessary care.

This proactive move marks a significant step toward greener urban spaces. It addresses pressing environmental challenges in Trichy.
