Mumbai's New Year Dawn Brings Surprise Rain, Santacruz Sees Highest Jan Rainfall in 12 Years
Surprise Mumbai Rains on New Year, Highest January Shower in 12 Years

Residents of Mumbai were greeted with an unexpected meteorological event on the first morning of 2025, as light rain showers descended upon the city, catching many by surprise. The unseasonal drizzle began in the early hours of Thursday, around 5 am, with parts of south Mumbai experiencing a brief period of more intense rainfall.

Rainfall Data and Meteorological Causes

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded significant figures from this unusual weather activity. The Colaba observatory noted 9.2mm of rainfall and a minimum temperature of 19.2°C, which was 0.3 degrees below the normal range. The reading from the Santacruz observatory was even more notable, logging 6.7mm of rainfall. This measurement represents the highest January rainfall at that station in the past 12 years. Santacruz also recorded a minimum temperature of 19.5°C, which was 2.7°C above normal. The area's all-time highest January rainfall remains 17.8mm, recorded back in 1994.

Beyond the main southern areas, suburbs including Andheri and Powai also witnessed light drizzle. Weather experts have pinpointed the cause of this surprise shower. Independent forecaster Athreya Shetty explained that an active western disturbance affecting north India since December 31 played a key role. A related cold front moved east-southeastwards over 24 hours. "As this cold front reached Mumbai this morning, it brought in moisture-laden westerly winds from the Arabian Sea," Shetty stated. The temperature difference on either side of this front led to the formation of convective clouds over south Mumbai and nearby regions, resulting in the light to moderate showers across the metropolis.

Forecast and Expected Temperature Trends

The IMD has indicated that the minimum temperatures in Mumbai are likely to stay between 17°C and 19°C for the next few days. The department does not expect any further rainfall in the city immediately following this event.

Looking ahead, weather conditions are set for a shift. Rushikesh Agre, who provides regular updates on the 'Mumbai Rains' X handle, forecasted mostly cool and pleasant weather for Friday. However, a change is on the horizon for the weekend. "From the weekend, temperatures are likely to rise as winds turn easterly," Agre said. He predicted that once the sea breeze establishes itself, daytime temperatures in Mumbai could reach around 32–33°C, while neighbouring Thane might see the mercury climb to between 35–36°C.

Implications for Mumbaikars

This unexpected January rain, while not disruptive, served as a rare start to the New Year. The event highlights the dynamic and sometimes unpredictable nature of weather patterns influencing India's western coast. The data underscores a significant weather anomaly, with the Santacruz recording marking a notable departure from typical dry January conditions. Citizens can expect a return to cooler mornings for a couple of days before a gradual warming trend takes hold as the week progresses, signaling a transition towards more typical early-year weather.
