Nagpur Unites for Earth Day with Sustainability Drives and Creative Displays
The city of Nagpur came together in a powerful display of environmental commitment to celebrate Earth Day, hosting a series of impactful programmes, awareness drives, and creative exhibitions that echoed a unified call for sustainable living and heightened environmental responsibility.
Environmental Action Group Event Highlights Urgent Concerns
At a significant event organized by the Environmental Action Group in Ramdaspeth, state wildlife board member Shrikant Tekade delivered a compelling address, urging citizens to recognize that the future of our planet is fundamentally shaped by the choices we make right at our doorstep. Speaking on the theme 'Invest in Our Planet,' Tekade highlighted pressing environmental issues, including Nagpur's daily generation of nearly 1,200 tonnes of solid waste and vehicular emissions contributing over 50% of the city's pollution levels.
Tekade strongly advocated for the increased adoption of the Miyawaki plantation method, a technique capable of creating centuries-worth of indigenous forests within just a decade. He also issued a stark warning about the challenges posed by rapid urban expansion, coupled with the everyday production of 1,200 tons of solid waste in Nagpur, emphasizing the critical need for more effective waste management strategies and enhanced urban forestry initiatives.
Green Vigil Foundation Drives Citizen Participation
Parallel to this, an extensive outreach campaign was conducted by the Green Vigil Foundation at the Children's Traffic Park in Dharampeth, in collaboration with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and the Earth Day Network. This event saw active and enthusiastic participation from citizens across the city. Founder Kaustav Chatterjee stressed the mantra that "every day is Earth Day," calling for immediate and sustained action to reduce pollution and protect the city's green cover.
Addressing the gathered crowd, team lead Surbhi Jaiswal reinforced this message, stating, "It is in our hands to take action and protect our planet, regardless of governance or administration. Every small step towards sustainability counts." Volunteers actively engaged with visitors, encouraging the adoption of sustainable practices such as water and energy conservation, reducing the use of single-use plastics, and embracing greener lifestyles overall.
Appreciation and Pledges for Environmental Protection
Karuna Singh, regional director of Earth Day.org, expressed appreciation for the concerted efforts of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and the Green Vigil Foundation in spreading awareness and inspiring citizens to take meaningful, actionable steps toward environmental protection. During the events, volunteers interacted extensively with citizens on sustainable habits, focusing on reducing plastic consumption and conserving vital resources like water and energy. Impressively, around 500 attendees made formal pledges to adopt and maintain eco-friendly practices in their daily lives.
Creative Art Display Adds Dimension to Celebrations
Adding a vibrant and creative dimension to the Earth Day celebrations, MahaMetro unveiled a striking 1,000-square-foot rangoli at the Dharampeth College Metro Station. This magnificent artwork was crafted by talented artists from Sanskar Bharati using over 1,100 kg of rangoli powder, symbolizing the community's artistic expression of environmental consciousness and collective commitment to a sustainable future.
