Mumbai Weather Update: Relief Expected After Heatwave, Light Rain Forecast
After enduring four heatwave days in less than two weeks this month, Mumbai, along with neighboring Thane and Palghar districts, is likely to experience light rain or thundershowers on Thursday. This forecast comes from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which had predicted similar conditions for Wednesday, though no rainfall was recorded on that day.
Temperature Dip and Heatwave Details
Daytime temperatures in Mumbai have shown a significant decline from last week's peak of 40°C, recorded on March 10, marking the hottest day in five years. On Wednesday, the weather bureau's observatories reported maximum temperatures of 32.4°C at Colaba and 31.3°C at Santacruz, which are 1.3°C and 2.3°C below normal, respectively. Minimum temperatures also dropped, with readings around 1°C below normal—22.6°C at Colaba and 21.3°C at Santacruz.
A heatwave is officially declared when temperatures reach 37°C or higher for two consecutive days. Mumbai experienced heatwaves on March 5, 9, 10, and 13 this month, highlighting the intense weather conditions residents have faced.
Forecast and Expert Insights
While significant thunderstorms are unlikely for Mumbai, experts indicate that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has the best chance of scattered light showers between late Wednesday night and Friday morning. This potential rainfall could provide much-needed relief from the recent heat and humidity.
The IMD's forecast for Thursday suggests a shift in weather patterns, with light rain or thundershowers expected to bring temporary respite. However, it's important to note that similar predictions for Wednesday did not materialize, underscoring the variability in weather conditions.
Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather reports and take necessary precautions during this period of fluctuating temperatures and potential rainfall.
