Mumbai Citizens Unite in Peaceful Protest to Safeguard Urban Green Cover
In a powerful display of environmental activism, approximately 300 concerned citizens converged at Versova Beach on April 12 for a peaceful demonstration named "Green Mumbai Sunday." The gathering served as a collective voice demanding immediate protection for the city's vital mangroves, forests, and remaining open spaces.
Coalition of Environmental Campaigns Joins Forces
The event was meticulously organized by the Save Mumbai Mangroves group, successfully uniting participants from several prominent ongoing environmental campaigns. This included dedicated members from the Save Aarey movement, Save SGNP initiative, and various other citizen-led efforts all focused on a singular mission: preserving Mumbai's rapidly diminishing urban green cover.
Participants embarked on a symbolic march, starting from the beach's main entrance and proceeding to the iconic Seven Bungalows rocks. Throughout the march, the air was filled with determined slogans decrying ecological degradation and passionately urging city authorities to adopt a more sustainable development model.
Cultural Expressions and Community Voices Amplify the Message
The march culminated in a significant gathering that featured a blend of impassioned speeches, soulful songs, and evocative poetry, all centered on the urgent theme of environmental conservation. A poignant moment was the formation of a human chain along the shoreline, a powerful visual symbol of unity and collective resistance against ecological destruction.
Adding crucial perspective to the protest, members of the indigenous Koli fishing community addressed the assembly. They detailed the severe ecological and livelihood consequences stemming from mangrove destruction. "There are approximately 8 to 10 distinct species of mangroves thriving in this creek, many possessing significant medicinal properties," explained Mohit, a community representative. "They represent an invaluable treasure for our fishing community. Their loss to unchecked development would constitute an irreparable and grave loss for both nature and our people."
Protest Targets Specific Development Project and Decision-Making Process
Several speakers at the event leveled serious allegations, claiming that local communities are systematically excluded from meaningful consultation in decision-making processes related to major coastal and infrastructure projects. This mobilization occurs directly against the contentious backdrop of the proposed Versova-Bhayandar Coastal Road project.
This large-scale infrastructure initiative received formal approval from the Bombay High Court in December 2025 and is projected to have a devastating impact, threatening the survival of over 45,000 mangrove trees. On the legal front, while the Supreme Court has not yet intervened in this specific matter, activists confirmed that fresh legal proceedings are being prepared on new grounds to challenge the project's environmental clearance.
The "Green Mumbai Sunday" protest stands as a clear testament to growing public awareness and civic action, highlighting the critical tension between urban development ambitions and the imperative to protect Mumbai's fragile and essential natural ecosystems for future generations.
