Maharashtra Grapples with Intense Heatwave as Temperatures Soar Above 40°C
More than half of Maharashtra is currently enduring severe heatwave conditions, with maximum temperatures consistently exceeding the 40°C mark across numerous districts. The situation has escalated dramatically, prompting widespread concern among residents and authorities alike.
Record-Breaking Temperatures Across the State
On Thursday, Akola recorded a scorching 44.2°C, marking not only the highest temperature in Maharashtra but also the peak across the entire country. This extreme heat has been mirrored in several other cities, with Amravati hitting a blistering 44°C, closely followed by Wardha at 43.9°C, and Nagpur and Solapur each registering 43.4°C.
Other affected areas include Yavatmal (42.8°C), Chandrapur (42.6°C), Buldana (42.4°C), Jalgaon (42.3°C), Parbhani and Jeur (42°C each), Ahilyanagar (41.9°C), Nanded and Sangli (41.8°C each), Dharashiv (41°C), Satara (40.9°C), and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (40.8°C). Notably, Pune and Kolhapur narrowly avoided the 40°C threshold, recording 39.7°C and 39.6°C, respectively.
IMD Criteria and Expert Insights on Heatwave Declaration
According to Mumbai-based weather expert Shantanu Patil, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) defines a heatwave in plains when temperatures exceed 40°C, and in hilly regions when they cross 30°C, provided such conditions are observed at a minimum of two stations for two consecutive days. "For coastal areas, a heatwave is identified when temperatures are at least 4.5°C above normal, with the actual maximum temperature crossing 37°C," Patil explained.
Manoj Raut, a professor at a science college in Solapur, highlighted the unusual timing of this heatwave. "Such extreme temperatures are typically recorded in May. This time, the heat has arrived much earlier. Roads in the city are almost deserted during peak afternoon hours as people avoid stepping out. Unseasonal rainfall is much needed to bring down the soaring temperatures," he stated.
Forecasted Relief: Thunderstorms Expected Over Weekend
Amid the relentless heat, some respite is on the horizon. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms over the upcoming weekend. On Saturday, thunderstorms are likely in Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Latur, and Dharashiv. Similar weather conditions are expected on Sunday in districts including Dhule, Jalgaon, Nashik, Pune, Sangli, Jalna, Beed, and Hingoli, which may offer brief relief from the intense heat.
Safety Advisories and Health Precautions
In response to the dangerous conditions, weather authorities have issued critical advisories urging the public to take necessary precautions. Key recommendations include:
- Avoid outdoor activities during peak daytime hours to minimize heat exposure.
- Stay well hydrated by drinking water frequently, even if not feeling thirsty.
- Cover heads and wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose cotton clothing to reduce heat absorption.
- Remain alert to symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, excessive sweating, muscle cramps, and seizures.
These measures are essential to prevent heatstroke and other health complications during this prolonged period of extreme weather.
