Kerala Experiences Temperature Drop Following Widespread Rainfall
Moderate rainfall across numerous locations in Kerala led to a noticeable decrease in maximum temperatures on Wednesday, according to meteorological observations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has subsequently issued a weather alert, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds for Thursday.
Temperature Variations Across Districts
Palakkad and Punalur both recorded maximum temperatures of 36.5°C, while several other areas, including Kannur airport, Kottayam, and Cochin International Airport (CIAL), registered temperatures exceeding 35°C. Palakkad reported the highest maximum temperature of the day at 36.8°C. In contrast, Thrissur experienced maximum temperatures below the normal range for this period.
Minimum temperatures showed appreciable declines in Malappuram and Kozhikode districts. Although Kannur saw a rise in minimum temperature, Kozhikode and Malappuram remained well below normal levels. Karipur airport and Kozhikode recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 22.2°C.
IMD Forecast and Weather Systems
The IMD has predicted that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over Kerala on Thursday. This warning is based on the analysis of prevailing weather systems.
Meteorologists noted a trough extending from north interior Karnataka to the Gulf of Mannar across south interior Karnataka. This system has now evolved, running from a cyclonic circulation over central parts of Madhya Pradesh to north interior Karnataka across Marathwada and Vidarbha regions. Additionally, another trough runs from the Gulf of Mannar to south interior Karnataka across Tamil Nadu.
Rainfall Measurements Recorded
According to 24-hour rainfall data recorded on Wednesday, several locations received significant precipitation:
- Mavelikkara and Thrithala received 6 cm of rainfall.
- Kunnamkulam and Angadipuram received 3 cm of rainfall.
The combination of rainfall and shifting weather patterns has contributed to the cooling effect across the state, with residents advised to stay updated on IMD alerts regarding the potential for severe weather conditions on Thursday.
