Kerala Braces for Intense Heatwave as IMD Issues Yellow Warning for 12 Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday escalated weather alerts by issuing a yellow warning for twelve districts across Kerala, forecasting a significant 2 to 3-degree Celsius rise in maximum temperatures. This heatwave alert comes as the state prepares for potentially dangerous weather conditions over the coming days.

District-Specific Temperature Forecasts for Friday

According to detailed IMD projections, maximum temperatures are expected to reach critical levels across multiple regions:

  • 38°C: Kollam, Kottayam, and Palakkad districts
  • 37°C: Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts
  • 36°C: Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, and Kasargod districts

The meteorological department emphasized that hot and humid weather conditions are very likely to prevail across these districts, with the exception of hilly areas where some relief might be found.

Serious Health Implications for Vulnerable Populations

IMD officials have expressed significant concern about the potential health impacts of these extreme weather conditions. The department specifically warned that vulnerable sections of the population face elevated risks, including:

  1. Infants and young children
  2. The elderly population
  3. People with chronic diseases and pre-existing health conditions
  4. Individuals exposed to direct sunlight for prolonged periods
  5. Workers engaged in heavy physical labor outdoors

The department highlighted that heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps and heat rash are particularly likely during peak daylight hours from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. These conditions can escalate quickly in high humidity environments where the body's natural cooling mechanisms become less effective.

Current Temperature Data Reveals Alarming Trends

Thursday's weather readings provided concerning evidence of the developing heatwave pattern:

  • Kottayam recorded temperatures soaring to 37.5°C, representing a 2.8-degree increase above normal seasonal levels
  • Vellanikkara (Thrissur) and Palakkad both reached 38.2°C, with Vellanikkara experiencing a 2.6-degree rise accompanied by 76% humidity
  • Cochin International Airport (CIAL) in Kochi reported mercury levels at 37.3°C with 63% humidity
  • Punalur registered 36.8°C with 69% humidity levels
  • Kozhikode and Kannur Airport both recorded maximum temperatures of 36°C with 61% humidity

Weather experts analyzing these readings noted a particularly dangerous phenomenon: in many of these locations, the actual felt temperature or heat index may be 5 to 7 degrees higher than the recorded thermometer readings due to the combination of high temperatures and elevated humidity levels.

Weekend Weather Patterns Bring Mixed Forecast

Looking ahead to the weekend, IMD forecasts indicate potential weather variability. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kilometers per hour are very likely to occur at one or two places across the state on both Saturday and Sunday.

The meteorological department provided technical analysis of current weather systems, noting that a trough in easterlies runs from Marathwada to south interior Karnataka across north interior Karnataka. Meanwhile, the trough from Marathwada to south coastal Karnataka across north interior Karnataka has become less marked, as has the upper air cyclonic circulation over south interior Karnataka and neighboring regions.

Residents across the affected districts are advised to take necessary precautions against heat exposure, stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and monitor vulnerable family members closely during this period of elevated temperatures and humidity.
