Indore's Day Temperature Drops 2.3°C, Winter Chill Returns
Indore's winter returns as day temperature drops sharply

Residents of Indore woke up to a familiar winter nip on Monday as the city's daytime temperature recorded a significant drop, bringing back the season's chill after a spell of warmer days. While the minimum temperature saw a slight increase, the maximum temperature fell sharply, making the afternoon distinctly cooler.

Day Sees Sharp Temperature Dip

The day began on a cold note with the night temperature settling at 6.6 degrees Celsius. This kept the early morning hours brisk, resulting in quieter roads as people preferred to stay indoors. At 8:30 am, the mercury read 14.8 degrees Celsius with haze limiting visibility to about 1,500 metres.

Although the sun made a brief appearance by noon, its warmth was short-lived. The maximum temperature for the day reached only 25.7 degrees Celsius. This reading is nearly 2 degrees lower than the seasonal average for this time of year. The drop became even more apparent when compared to Sunday's maximum of 28 degrees Celsius, marking a noticeable decline of 2.3 degrees Celsius within 24 hours. By 5:30 pm, the temperature had fallen further to 22.6 degrees Celsius, allowing the characteristic winter chill to reclaim the air.

Fog Disrupts Other MP Districts, Indore Spared

While Indore and the Ujjain division have no weather warnings for the next four days, several other parts of Madhya Pradesh are grappling with fog-related disruptions. The Meteorological department has issued dense to moderate fog alerts for northern, eastern, and some central districts of the state where morning visibility has plummeted recently.

Explaining the weather patterns, Arun Sharma from the Bhopal Met centre said multiple western disturbances are influencing the region's climate. A cyclonic circulation is active over north Pakistan, while another system is positioned higher in the atmosphere. This system is accompanied by strong sub-tropical westerly jet stream winds exceeding 220 kilometres per hour. A fresh western disturbance is expected to impact the region around December 17.

Travel Advisory for Fog-Affected Areas

Over the past 24 hours, very dense fog was reported in districts like Satna, Rewa, and Khajuraho, where visibility dropped below 50 metres. Moderate fog affected Gwalior and Bhopal, while Datia experienced shallow fog.

In light of these conditions, the Met department has advised caution. Residents in fog-affected areas are urged to avoid non-essential early morning travel. Drivers have been asked to use fog lights and proceed with care. The department has also specifically recommended that elderly citizens postpone their morning walks, as the foggy conditions can worsen existing health issues. For now, temperature patterns across Madhya Pradesh are expected to remain largely unchanged over the coming days.
