Palamu Forest Officials Seize Two Autorickshaws Loaded with Illegal Firewood in Daltonganj
In a significant enforcement action, officials from the Medininagar forest division in Palamu district seized two autorickshaws loaded with illegal firewood on Tuesday. The incident occurred in the Kundri range, where the vehicles were discovered transporting the contraband timber. The drivers of the autorickshaws fled the scene, abandoning the vehicles as forest authorities moved in to intercept them.
Legal Proceedings Initiated Following Seizure
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Satyam Kumar confirmed that a formal complaint has been lodged with the court of the chief judicial magistrate in Daltonganj regarding the seizure. "A complaint has been filed in respect of the seizure of firewood loaded in two autorickshaws," Kumar stated, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense under the Forest Act.
Rising Demand for Firewood Amid LPG Shortage in Palamu
Sources indicate that the demand for firewood in Palamu has surged recently, driven by shortages of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). Forest officials report that this increased demand is leading to the illegal felling of trees, including small, dry, and green varieties, which are being chopped for use as firewood. Efforts are currently underway to trace the origin of the seized timber, with investigations focusing on whether it was collected from forest beats or non-forest land.
DFO Kumar elaborated on the legal aspects, noting, "A raiyyat (landowner) is free to fell trees on his land, but any shifting of the timber requires a valid transit permit." He highlighted that transportation or shipment of timber without such a permit constitutes a major offense under the Forest Act, underscoring the importance of regulatory compliance in forest management.
Ongoing Investigation and Pursuit of Suspects
In-charge forester Souhana Saurav Toppo provided an update on the investigation, revealing that the identities of two individuals involved in the illegal transportation have been established. "We have found the two persons who were instrumental in the illegal transportation of firewood. They will be caught soon," Toppo asserted, indicating that law enforcement efforts are intensifying to apprehend the suspects and curb such activities.
The seizure highlights broader challenges in forest conservation and resource management in the region, particularly as economic pressures and energy shortages drive illicit activities. Authorities are urging the public to adhere to legal requirements for timber transit to prevent further degradation of forest resources.
