Himachal Pradesh on High Alert for Severe Weather Conditions
The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued a critical weather warning for Himachal Pradesh, forecasting another intense spell of inclement weather from April 24 to 28. This alert comes after the state experienced a significant 28% excess rainfall during the current month, raising concerns about potential disruptions and safety hazards.
Yellow Alert Issued for Multiple Districts
A yellow alert has been officially declared for several key districts, including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Hamirpur. Residents and authorities in these areas are advised to prepare for severe weather phenomena from April 25 to 28. The forecast specifically warns of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, which could pose risks to infrastructure, agriculture, and daily activities.
Additionally, the meteorological experts have indicated that snowfall is likely in the higher reaches of the state during this period. This prediction adds another layer of complexity to the weather scenario, potentially affecting transportation and tourism in elevated regions.
Excess Rainfall and Temperature Extremes
Himachal Pradesh has already recorded above-normal rainfall this month, with 61.2mm of precipitation measured up to April 22, compared to the typical average of 47.9mm. This 28% surplus highlights the unusual weather patterns affecting the region, which may contribute to the severity of the upcoming conditions.
The impending rain is expected to provide some relief from the recent hot weather. On Wednesday, Una emerged as the hottest town in Himachal Pradesh, recording a maximum temperature of 38.7°C. Other areas also experienced high temperatures:
- Kangra: 35.2°C
- Sundernagar: 35°C
- Berthin: 34.7°C
- Mandi: 34.4°C
- Solan: 31.5°C
- Bhuntar: 33°C
Among popular tourist destinations, Dharamshala was the warmest with a high of 31°C, followed by Shimla at 26.5°C and Manali at 26.3°C. The forecasted weather change could bring temporary cooling but also challenges for visitors and locals alike.
Preparedness and Safety Measures
With the yellow alert in effect, authorities are urging residents and tourists to take necessary precautions. This includes securing loose objects, avoiding travel during severe weather, and staying informed through official updates. The combination of excess rainfall and predicted thunderstorms underscores the need for heightened vigilance across the state.
As Himachal Pradesh braces for this weather spell, monitoring by the Meteorological Centre will continue to provide real-time insights and warnings to mitigate potential impacts on communities and infrastructure.
