Residents and tourists in Himachal Pradesh can finally expect relief from the persistent dry conditions, as the Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued a forecast predicting precipitation across the state. The weather department anticipates a break in the prolonged dry spell with light to moderate rain and snowfall in the higher reaches from December 30 to January 2.
Detailed Forecast: Rain, Snow, and Fog
According to the detailed forecast from the Shimla Meteorological Centre, the precipitation will vary in intensity over the four-day period. Isolated high-altitude areas are likely to experience light rain and snowfall on December 30 and January 2. However, more significant weather activity is expected on December 31 and January 1, with moderate precipitation predicted for these dates.
In addition to the rain and snow, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for dense fog and cold waves. Dense fog is likely to envelop the low hills and plains of Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Solan, and Sirmaur districts on December 29 and 30.
Cold Wave to Grip Multiple Districts
The IMD has also predicted a cold wave that will impact several parts of the state. Districts including Chamba, Kullu, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur are likely to be in the grip of a cold wave on December 31 and January 1. Furthermore, the cold conditions are expected to extend to Una, Bilaspur, and Hamirpur specifically on January 1.
Current Temperature Snapshot
As the state awaits the incoming weather system, temperatures have already plunged in many areas. On Sunday, Kukumseri in Lahaul and Spiti recorded the lowest temperature in Himachal Pradesh at a chilling –5.4°C.
Popular tourist destinations also witnessed cold mornings. The minimum temperatures recorded were:
- Manali: 3.5°C
- Palampur: 5°C
- Shimla: 9°C
- Kasauli: 9.4°C
- Dharamshala: 9.6°C
The forecasted weather activity is expected to significantly alter these readings, bringing much-needed moisture and potentially disrupting travel plans in the higher reaches. Authorities advise residents and visitors to prepare for the changing conditions, especially the anticipated fog and cold wave.
