Chennai Weekend Alert: IMD Issues Heavy Rain Warning for December 10-11
Heavy Rain Warning for Chennai This Weekend

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather warning for coastal Tamil Nadu, with the state capital Chennai bracing for a wet and stormy weekend. Residents are advised to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on Saturday, December 10, and Sunday, December 11.

Weekend Weather Takes a Turn

The forecast for increased rainfall activity is linked to a developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal. According to the IMD, an upper air cyclonic circulation has led to the formation of a low-pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean. This system is expected to intensify as it moves.

It is likely to concentrate into a Depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and continue on a west-northwestward track across the region. This meteorological development is the primary driver behind the predicted heavy showers for the weekend.

Detailed Forecast for Chennai and Coastal Areas

While Thursday, December 8, may see partly cloudy skies in Chennai with light to moderate rain at isolated places along the coast, the main event is slated for the weekend. The IMD bulletin specifically warns that on Saturday, Chennai and adjoining districts are likely to experience moderate to heavy rain.

The unsettling weather pattern is not a one-day affair. The heavy rain warning extends to Sunday as well, indicating a sustained period of intense precipitation. In contrast, interior regions of Tamil Nadu are expected to remain largely dry.

Temperature-wise, Chennai can expect a maximum of around 29 degrees Celsius and a minimum hovering near 23 degrees Celsius, providing some respite from the heat amidst the rains.

Precautions and Advisory

With the official heavy rain warning in place for both days, authorities and citizens are urged to exercise caution. The combination of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning poses potential risks, including waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic disruptions, and safety hazards from electrical strikes.

Residents in the warned regions, especially in Chennai and coastal Tamil Nadu, should stay updated with the latest IMD bulletins, avoid unnecessary travel during intense spells, and take necessary precautions to secure property and ensure personal safety during the thunderstorm activity.
