Haryana Greenlights Major Rs 298.4 Crore CAMPA Afforestation and Conservation Plan
The state of Haryana has officially sanctioned a comprehensive annual plan of operations valued at Rs 298.4 crore under the Compensatory Afforestation Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA). This significant decision emerged from the 10th steering committee meeting, which was presided over by Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi. During the proceedings, officials underscored the critical importance of outcome-based implementation and ensuring timely execution to maximize the plan's effectiveness.
Large-Scale Afforestation and Wildlife Protection Initiatives
The approved plan is strategically centered on executing large-scale afforestation projects, enhancing wildlife protection measures, promoting the adoption of renewable energy sources, and fostering robust community participation. These efforts are collectively aimed at substantially strengthening Haryana's green cover and ecological resilience. CAMPA CEO Navdeep Singh provided detailed insights, revealing that over 20 lakh saplings will be planted across an expansive area of 1,882 hectares. Additionally, maintenance activities for existing plantations will be conducted over 4,518 hectares to significantly improve survival rates and ensure long-term sustainability.
Urban Forests and Ecological Restoration in Sensitive Regions
To directly address the pressing issues of urban pollution and escalating heat stress, the state has committed to developing dense urban forests utilizing the innovative Miyawaki technique. This initiative will span 16 hectares across various urban and semi-urban areas, creating lush green spaces that enhance air quality and provide cooling effects. Furthermore, an outlay exceeding Rs 33 crore has been allocated for catchment area treatment works in the ecologically sensitive Shivalik and Aravalli regions. These projects will focus on vital activities such as soil conservation, water harvesting, and the restoration of degraded land, while simultaneously generating valuable local employment opportunities.
Public Outreach and Environmental Education Programme
The CAMPA plan also incorporates a significant public outreach component designed to cultivate environmental consciousness from a young age. A key highlight is the launch of ‘Haritima: Hariyali ka Rang, Haryana ke Sang’, an environmental awareness programme specifically tailored for students in Classes 6 to 10 across government schools. As part of this initiative, approximately 70 eco-camps will be organized, offering students immersive educational experiences by taking them to forests, wildlife sanctuaries, and various ecotourism sites. This hands-on approach aims to instill a deeper appreciation for nature and promote sustainable practices among the youth.
