Madurai Launches Green Drive: 50 Saplings Planted at Kondaiyanpatti School
Green Tamil Nadu Mission: Madurai's Plantation Drive Expands

The Madurai forest division has intensified its green efforts, expanding a major plantation programme across the district. This initiative is a core part of the ambitious Green Tamil Nadu Mission (GTM), which targets planting a significant number of saplings across the state.

Leadership Kickstarts the Green Initiative

The drive gained momentum approximately ten days ago with a symbolic start at the Madurai district collectorate. District Collector K J Praveen Kumar and District Forest Officer Revti Raman personally inaugurated the effort by planting five saplings at the site, setting the tone for community participation.

Scaling Up: School Grounds Turned Green

The programme rapidly scaled up, reaching educational institutions. On Monday, a focused plantation event saw 50 saplings planted at the Government Higher Secondary School in Kondaiyanpatti. This move aims to instill environmental consciousness in the younger generation while directly contributing to the mission's goals.

The state-wide ambition is substantial. The Green Tamil Nadu Mission envisions the planting of 2,000 saplings across 38 districts, creating a widespread impact on Tamil Nadu's green cover. The Madurai division's work is a crucial component of this larger ecological strategy.

Collaborative Effort for a Greener Future

This government-led drive is receiving valuable support from corporate and civil society partners. Kothari Industrial Corporation Limited (KICL) and the ExNoRa International Foundation are actively collaborating with the authorities to ensure the success and sustainability of the plantation programme. Such partnerships are vital for resource mobilization and long-term maintenance of the planted saplings.

The ongoing plantation drive in Madurai represents a concrete step towards combating climate change and enhancing local biodiversity. By targeting public spaces like schools and government offices, the initiative ensures maximum community engagement and awareness, fostering a collective responsibility for a greener Tamil Nadu.
