Rain and Dust Storm Bring Respite from Heatwave in Delhi-NCR
A sudden spell of rain accompanied by a dust storm swept across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and other parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) on Wednesday evening, providing much-needed relief from the scorching heatwave that had gripped the region for days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert, warning of more thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall in the coming hours.
The downpour, which began around 5:30 PM, was preceded by strong winds and a thick blanket of dust that reduced visibility significantly. Several areas in Delhi, including Connaught Place, Lajpat Nagar, and Rohini, reported waterlogging and traffic snarls. Noida and Ghaziabad also experienced similar conditions, with residents taking to social media to share videos of the sudden weather change.
IMD Issues Red Alert for More Thunderstorms
The IMD has forecast that the rain and dust storm activity is likely to continue over the next 24 to 48 hours. A red alert has been issued for Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and strong winds reaching speeds of 50-70 kmph. According to the IMD, the maximum temperature in Delhi dropped by nearly 10 degrees Celsius following the rain, from 44°C to around 34°C.
Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging. The Delhi Police and traffic authorities have been put on high alert to manage any emergencies. Power outages were reported in several parts of the city due to falling trees and damaged power lines.
Impact on Daily Life and Precautions
The sudden change in weather has brought relief but also challenges. Flights at the Indira Gandhi International Airport were delayed by nearly an hour due to poor visibility. The Delhi Metro reported minor disruptions on some lines as a precautionary measure. Schools in the region have been advised to remain closed on Thursday as a safety measure.
According to a senior IMD official, "The interaction of a western disturbance with a trough over northwest India is causing these intense weather conditions. We expect the rain to continue, which will further bring down temperatures and improve air quality." The official also urged people to take precautions against lightning and strong winds.
The rain is expected to provide significant relief to farmers in the surrounding regions, who were facing drought-like conditions. However, the sudden downpour may also damage standing crops if accompanied by hailstorms. The IMD has recommended that farmers take necessary steps to protect their harvest.
Forecast for the Next 48 Hours
For Thursday, the IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies with heavy rain and thunderstorms in Delhi and NCR. The maximum temperature is likely to remain around 33°C, while the minimum will be around 25°C. Similar conditions are expected for Friday, with the intensity of rain likely to decrease gradually. The red alert will remain in effect until further notice.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government has activated its emergency response teams to deal with any situation arising from the weather. Citizens are encouraged to report any incidents of waterlogging or tree falls to the control room. The rain has brought a welcome change after weeks of intense heat, with many residents expressing relief on social media.
