Kolkata's Dawoodi Bohras Plant 5300+ Bird Feeders, Lead Green Drive
Dawoodi Bohra Community's Project Rise Transforms Kolkata

In a significant move to address pressing urban and social challenges, the Dawoodi Bohra community in Kolkata has amplified its outreach through a series of targeted actions under its global philanthropic program, Project Rise. This initiative, established in 2018, is tackling issues like environmental degradation, malnutrition, and urban vulnerability with hands-on, practical solutions.

Grassroots Action for a Greener City

Driven by volunteers, the community's efforts are visibly transforming the city's landscape. A major focus has been on enhancing green cover through extensive tree plantation drives across Kolkata and its adjoining districts. Alongside this, the volunteers regularly organise distribution of food and essential clothing to support vulnerable groups and participate in cleanliness drives to improve the condition of public spaces.

The Ambitious Save Our Sparrows Campaign

One of the most notable contributions from the community is a dedicated effort to revive the city's avian population. As part of the nationwide Save Our Sparrows campaign run by the Burhani Foundation, the Bohra volunteers have installed more than 5,300 bird feeders and nests at key locations across the metropolis.

Prominent sites benefiting from this initiative include:

  • Fort William (Vijay Durg)
  • The Botanical Gardens
  • Banobithan (Central Park)
  • Eden Gardens
  • Science City
  • Navy House

This large-scale project aims to counter the alarming decline in sparrow populations by improving urban habitats and fostering greater public awareness about the issue.

Inspired by a Culture of Care

A project volunteer from Kolkata shared that the work is fueled by a deep sense of purpose. The volunteer highlighted that complex challenges such as climate change and poverty require collective action. The community's efforts are inspired by the guidance of His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, focusing on tangible support for the city. The philosophy is built on simple, impactful acts—feeding a bird, planting a sapling, or offering a meal—that collectively build a robust culture of care and responsibility.

Globally, Project Rise encompasses a wide range of humanitarian sectors including healthcare, nutrition, water security, women's empowerment, and environmental stewardship. The ultimate goal is to foster resilient and inclusive societies through sustained, on-ground engagement.
