Cyclone Ditwah Barrels Toward Indian Coast
The severe cyclonic storm Ditwah is now advancing toward India's eastern coastline after leaving a trail of destruction in Sri Lanka. The cyclone, currently positioned over coastal Sri Lanka and the southwest Bay of Bengal, is moving in a north-northwesterly direction and is expected to make landfall in India by early November 30.
Regions on High Alert
The India Meteorological Department has issued red alerts for several districts in North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and South Andhra Pradesh. The warning specifically mentions extremely heavy rainfall in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Wind speeds are anticipated to reach up to 90 kilometers per hour, posing significant danger to coastal communities.
Fishermen across the affected regions have been strictly instructed to remain on shore, with all coastal operations temporarily suspended. The weather disturbance is also expected to bring rain, thunderstorms, and lightning to a wider area including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Destruction in Sri Lanka
Before turning toward India, Cyclone Ditwah wreaked havoc in Sri Lanka, causing at least 56 confirmed deaths and displacing thousands of residents. The cyclone's impact has already demonstrated its destructive potential, prompting Indian authorities to take immediate precautionary measures.
Disaster relief and rescue teams have been deployed across vulnerable coastal areas, with evacuation procedures being prepared for communities at highest risk. Emergency response protocols have been activated as the cyclone continues to intensify while approaching India's eastern seaboard.
Authorities are urging residents in the affected regions to follow official instructions, avoid coastal areas, and prepare for potential power outages and transportation disruptions. The coming hours are critical as the cyclone moves closer to the Indian mainland.
