Blackbuck Fatally Struck by Vehicle in Ganjam District
Forest officials in Berhampur made a grim discovery on Sunday, recovering the carcass of a 10-year-old male blackbuck near Bajrakota on the Bhetanai-Badakholi road. The animal, an endangered species, is suspected to have been hit by an unknown vehicle within the Aska forest range office jurisdiction in Ganjam district.
Post-Mortem Conducted and Investigation Launched
Pramod Kumar Panda, the range officer of Aska, confirmed that a thorough post-mortem examination was conducted on the blackbuck's remains before the carcass was properly buried. Forest authorities are actively working to identify the vehicle responsible for the fatal collision. Initial assessments suggest the blackbuck was likely crushed while attempting to cross the road, a tragic scenario that has become increasingly common in the region.
Critical Habitat Under Threat
The Balipadara-Bhetanai area near Aska represents one of the major habitats for blackbucks in Ganjam district, which stands as the only habitat for this species in the entire region. This incident underscores the vulnerability of these animals as they navigate human-altered landscapes.
Drought Conditions Force Dangerous Crossings
Forest officials and wildlife experts point to severe environmental pressures contributing to such accidents. The scorching heat has dried up traditional water bodies within the forest area, forcing blackbucks to frequently cross roads in search of water sources. This necessary migration puts them directly in the path of vehicular traffic, leading to preventable fatalities.
Calls for Immediate Protective Measures
Amulya Kumar Upadhyaya, president of the Ganjam District Blackbuck Protection Committee, has issued an urgent appeal to forest authorities. "Forest officials need to take immediate steps to prevent such mishaps," Upadhyaya emphasized, highlighting the growing concern among conservationists about the safety of this endangered population.
The incident has sparked renewed discussions about wildlife protection measures, including:
- Enhanced road signage in blackbuck crossing zones
- Potential speed restrictions during peak animal movement times
- Creation of alternative water sources within forest boundaries
- Increased patrolling and monitoring of vulnerable road sections
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in balancing human infrastructure development with critical wildlife conservation efforts in ecologically sensitive regions like Ganjam district.
