Palghar Collector Unveils Tourism-Led Growth Plan for Jawhar and Mokhada
Palghar Collector Charts Tourism Plan for Jawhar, Mokhada

The Palghar district collector has unveiled a comprehensive tourism-led growth plan for the tribal regions of Jawhar and Mokhada, aiming to transform these areas into prominent tourist destinations. The initiative focuses on leveraging natural attractions like waterfalls and village pathways to stimulate economic development and improve local livelihoods.

Strategic Focus on Natural Assets

The plan prioritizes the development of infrastructure around key natural features, including the renowned waterfalls in Jawhar and the scenic village pathways in Mokhada. By enhancing accessibility and amenities, the district administration hopes to attract more visitors and extend their stay, thereby generating increased revenue for local communities.

Addressing Regional Disparities

This move is particularly significant given Palghar's unique position within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Carved out of Thane district in 2014, Palghar presents a stark contrast between its urbanizing coastal areas and the underdeveloped tribal hinterlands of Jawhar and Mokhada. The tourism plan aims to bridge this gap by channeling investment and attention to these marginalized regions.

The collector emphasized that the strategy is not just about promoting tourism but also about creating sustainable livelihoods. Plans include training local youth as guides, promoting homestays, and developing local handicrafts and cuisine as tourist attractions. The administration is also working on improving road connectivity and basic amenities like sanitation and drinking water at tourist spots.

Environmental conservation is a key component, with measures to ensure that tourism development does not harm the fragile ecosystem of the Sahyadri hills. The collector stated that community participation will be central to the plan's implementation, ensuring that the benefits of tourism reach the grassroots level.

This initiative is expected to set a precedent for other tribal regions in Maharashtra, showcasing how tourism can be a catalyst for inclusive growth.
