The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised an orange alert for severe cold-day conditions and dense fog across a majority of Bihar's districts, with the challenging weather expected to persist until Wednesday, January 10. Residents in northern and eastern regions are bracing for icy winds and significantly reduced visibility.
Districts on High Alert as Mercury Plummets
According to the IMD's warning issued on Wednesday, the orange alert for intense cold and thick fog covers numerous districts. East Champaran, West Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, and Patna are among the areas under the alert. The forecast indicates that northern and eastern districts, including Madhubani, Kishanganj, Supaul, Araria, Purnia, and Katihar, will likely bear the brunt of the harsh conditions, experiencing near-zero visibility and piercing cold winds.
Temperature Trends and Statewide Dry Spell
Data from the past 24 hours reveals the state has already been grappling with persistent fog and cold-day conditions. Maximum temperatures showed a slight variation, ranging from 19.8°C in Motihari to 13.2°C in Forbesganj. While many areas saw a minor rise of 2°C to 4°C on Wednesday, the minimum temperature plunged to a chilling 4.4°C in Sabour, Bhagalpur, marking it as the coldest spot in Bihar. The IMD's forecast predicts a further dip in the coming days.
The weather department anticipates dry weather to prevail across the entire state for the next week. However, a fresh spell of cold is on the horizon. Maximum temperatures are likely to fall by 2°C to 3°C within the next 24 hours. More concerning is the prediction for minimum temperatures, which are expected to drop by an additional 2°C to 3°C over the next four days, intensifying the cold wave.
Travel Disruptions and Health Advisory
The combination of dense fog and plummeting temperatures poses significant risks. Near-zero visibility in several districts is expected to severely disrupt road, rail, and air travel, leading to delays and cancellations. Authorities are advising commuters to exercise extreme caution and check schedules before venturing out.
Health experts are urging the public, especially the elderly and children, to take necessary precautions against the biting cold. Recommendations include wearing layered woolen clothing, staying indoors during early morning and late evening hours, and ensuring proper heating where possible. The extended period of cold-day conditions underscores the need for vigilance until the alert is lifted on January 10.
