Wildfire Ignites in Bengaluru's Turahalli Reserve Forest, Officials Point to Possible Human Role
A significant wildfire erupted in the Turahalli Reserve Forest located in south Bengaluru on Wednesday evening, marking the first such incident of the season. This occurred despite weather forecasts predicting thundershowers for the city, highlighting the unexpected nature of the blaze.
Residents Sound Alarm as Flames Spread Rapidly
Thick smoke billowing from the forest was first observed by residents living along the 80-feet road around 6 pm. The flames quickly advanced across the area behind Karishma Hills, situated off Kanakapura Road, creating a visible and alarming scene for the local community.
Swift Mobilization of Forest Officials and Equipment
Alerted by these residents, officials from the Bengaluru Urban forest division immediately dispatched teams of watchers and guards to the site. A senior forest officer from the Kaggalipura Range reported that field staff were mobilized with essential firefighting tools, including blowers, by 6:45 pm. "They are still working at the site, controlling the further spread of the wildfire. In a few hours, we will be able to contain the fire completely," the officer stated, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to manage the situation.
Preliminary Investigation Suggests Human Involvement
Initial assessments by forest authorities indicate that the wildfire may have been deliberately set by humans. Officials suspect that miscreants trespassed into the forest and ignited the fire, possibly to scare wildlife such as leopards and deer that inhabit Turahalli. "There are leopards, deer and other wildlife inside Turahalli. A few miscreants may have set fire to scare these animals. We spotted the fire very early with the help of local residents, and it will be contained without much damage to the flora and fauna," an official explained. Additionally, they noted that recent rains had left the forest with retained moisture, which helped prevent the fire from spreading more aggressively.
Residents Report Extensive Flames and Containment Efforts
Members of residents' welfare associations from nearby areas reported that the flames were visible across a stretch of nearly 1,000 meters. The fire appeared to be advancing towards the Turahalli Tree Park near Bayyanapalya before containment measures were intensified. This early detection and rapid response played a crucial role in mitigating potential damage to the forest ecosystem.
The incident underscores the importance of community vigilance and prompt action in protecting natural reserves from such threats, especially in urban-adjacent areas like Bengaluru.
