Aurangabad judge cycles to court for fuel conservation

In a symbolic gesture backing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for fuel conservation and sustainable living, Aurangabad district and sessions Judge Rajeev Ranjan Kumar cycled to court on Wednesday, highlighting the role of individual responsibility in promoting environmental awareness and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Judge leads by example

The senior judicial officer travelled nearly two kilometres from his official residence to the district court on a bicycle. He was accompanied by security personnel and court staff, several of whom also chose to cycle. The unusual sight drew attention within the court campus and quickly became a talking point among advocates and residents.

Initiative for awareness

Sources said the initiative aimed not just at saving fuel at a personal level but also at creating awareness about responsible energy consumption. By opting for a bicycle over a car, the judge sought to underline how small individual efforts can collectively help reduce petrol and diesel usage, ease economic pressure, and support environmental sustainability.

Kumar urged citizens to minimise unnecessary vehicle use and adopt cycling or walking for short distances. He noted that rising fuel consumption increases dependence on fossil fuels while placing additional financial strain on the country. Highlighting the health benefits of cycling, he said such practices can also contribute to lowering pollution levels. At a time when climate change and environmental degradation are major global concerns, he stressed the need for practical and sustainable lifestyle choices.

Positive response from legal fraternity

Lawyers and court staff praised the move, saying initiatives by people in public positions often have a stronger social impact. Many described the gesture as a meaningful message on responsible citizenship and environmental awareness.
