Deadly Storms and Torrential Rains Claim 45 Lives Across Afghanistan and Pakistan

Catastrophic weather conditions have unleashed a wave of destruction across South Asia, with disaster officials confirming at least 45 fatalities over recent days in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The relentless rainfall, accompanied by severe storms, has triggered devastating floods and landslides, causing significant loss of life and property in multiple provinces.

Afghanistan Bears the Brunt with 28 Fatalities and Widespread Damage

According to Afghanistan's National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA), the country has suffered immensely since Thursday, with 28 individuals losing their lives and 49 others sustaining injuries. The authority reported that more than 100 homes have been completely destroyed, while over 430 houses have sustained damage, leaving many families displaced and vulnerable.

Tragic incidents have been reported from various regions:

  • In the northwestern Badghis province, a 14-year-old boy was struck and killed by lightning, as confirmed by police spokesman Sediqullah Seddiqi.
  • In the same province, three people drowned while attempting to retrieve driftwood for heating purposes, highlighting the desperate measures taken by communities.
  • Central Daikundi witnessed the death of a five-year-old child when a roof collapsed under the weight of the storm.
  • Eastern Nangarhar, bordering Pakistan, reported the death of a woman under similar circumstances, according to police spokesman Sayed Tayeb Hamad.

ANDMA has issued urgent warnings, advising citizens to avoid rivers and flooded streams and to closely monitor weather forecasts. The severe weather has already forced the closure of several major highways in central and eastern Afghanistan, with forecasts predicting additional rain and storms for Tuesday.

Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province Reports 17 Deaths

Across the border in Pakistan, the provincial disaster management authority in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa confirmed 17 fatalities and 56 injuries since Wednesday. The storms have compounded the region's vulnerabilities, adding to the cross-border humanitarian crisis.

Recurring Disasters and Climate Change Concerns

This latest disaster follows a similar tragedy in January, when over 60 people perished due to snow and heavy rain in Afghanistan. The country, among the world's poorest after decades of conflict, frequently experiences deadly floods, landslides, and storms, particularly in remote areas with fragile infrastructure.

Scientists emphasize that Afghanistan is highly exposed to the impacts of climate change, which is intensifying extreme weather events. The recurring nature of these disasters underscores the urgent need for enhanced disaster preparedness and resilient infrastructure in vulnerable regions.
